Conversation Stories
Learning Stories are examples of formative assessment, and in Chapter 2 we argued that they must include reference to how the learning will grow, or has grown, for example:
• a section that suggests what will improve or progress the learning (the formative part of the story)
• some possible next steps for progress are canvassed within the text of the story, and a further story will refer back to earlier work
• a connection is made to previous Learning Stories as a review of progress.
Portfolios of Learning Stories and examples of work are designed therefore to provide a record of a child’s learning over time. However, in practice, portfolios often include a range of purposes for the documentation, not just as an assess- ment with respect to a wider frame. The story of a child’s work or play enables conversations between children families and teachers, and sends messages about the learning that is valued here. These are interesting for families and children – especially if they include photographs or a child’s art work – so they often provoke a response from the family. They keep a conversation between teachers and families going. When they include pictures, they also speak to the child; they can be the catalyst for conversations and they may become their first reader.
A magical moment
Learning Story 7.1, ‘A magical moment’, is an example of a conversation story. It is written to the father of Francesca, describing an occasion when he visited the cen- tre. Francesca ‘insisted’ that her father should read the storybook planned for that time. The teacher writes with appreciation that the father included other children during his interactions, and emphasises that these important relationships between educators and families are important. It will go into Francesca’s portfolio, and, in a sense, he is now ‘present’ at the centre, his picture and this event always available.
Super Bowl day
Learning Story 7.8, ‘Super Bowl day’, is about Michael and his family. Michael is in the playground and playing football – without a ball! He was pretending to hold a ball, and then to throw it to Ana, the teacher. She threw the pretend ball back, Michael jumped to get it, falling down. Another child arrived, and she became a participant in the football game. What was impressive about this story was the response from the family: an uncle, a brother, the mother, the father, and the grandfather-father. The family reflect on his football skills, and his imagination, in English and Spanish. The yard has no ball, but this does not prevent Michael from playing with an imaginary ball in a very realistic way. A student teacher responds as well. The grandfather-father tells the story of teaching Michael when he started to walk, to kick a ball, and how they watched soccer together on the television. This affirmation of his intelligence, his English language, his sporting ability and his imagination is now written down for him, and for the family, to treasure.
