ACT ONE
FADE IN:
SFX: DISTANT THUNDER.
INT. MOJO CAFE - DINING AREA - MORNING SCENE 1
The usual crowd are there. Mama Tee is her normal cheery
self behind the bar. Rocky & Zug are in deep conversation
at the end of the bar.
Huggle & Bog burst in followed by Bug who pushes past the
others.
BUG
The Invasion! It’s here! ... The
Aliens are coming!
BOG
Upsiders!
HUGGLE
(TO DUG) I think you had better come
and see this.
DUG
What is it?
BUG
(PANIC IN HIS VOICE) A deadly
spaceship as big as a mountain.
BOG
(GLARING AT BUG) Upsider piece of
junk.
BUG
(ARGUING) Spaceship!
DUG
Where?
HUGGLE
North side of the Village ... it looks
bad.
Rocky overhears. He whispers to Zug.
ROCKY
Hey Zug, let’s take a look ... I know
a short cut.
Unseen they sneak out of the back door.
The others spill out onto the veranda. Dug’s chariot is
parked out front.
DUG
Jump on (TO HUGGLE). You guys get
Grandpa Lug to meet us there.
Dug and Huggle take off while Bog & Bug run toward Lug’s
junkyard pushing, shoving and arguing.
BUG
Big deadly alien spaceship!
BOG
Upsider junk!
BUG
Not.
BOG
Ok ... Upsider Big junk.
BUG
Space ship..
CUT - EXT. GIANT KELP FOREST:
The chariot races through the Kelp forest at full speed
twisting and turning, diving and swerving. Huggle is
hanging on wide eyed. Strands of kelp nearly knocking her
from the chariot. Dug, flying goggles on, is concentrating.
A look of horror as he skids the chariot to an emergency
halt. In front of them is a huge grey wall blocking their
path, it extends up and up as far as they can see, and just
as wide. Dug slowly maneuvers the chariot along the wall.
They are awestruck at the size of the thing. Coming from
the grey wall is an eerie hollow metallic banging.
Peeping out of their hiding place at the edge of the kelp
forest are Bog & Bug.
Dug guides the chariot at a walking pace along the grey
wall. They turn a corner and are confronted by massive
scary propellers.
BUG (CONT'D)
(WHISPERING/SHOUTING TO DUG) I told
you it was alien!
DUG
I think I’ve seen this before!? It
can’t be!?
HUGGLE
(HORRIFIED) Oh, NO! ... Not again!?
The booming noise increases.
Bog & Bug are following behind at a safe distance.
2.
DUG
(CALLING OVER HIS SHOULDER TO BOG) Did
you find Grandpa Lug?
The chariot slowly moves around another corner.
HUGGLE
Dug look out!
Dug is amazed to find Grandpa Lug in front of him, using
his walking stick as a hammer on the grey wall. The chariot
skids to a stop just in time.
LUG
(MUTTERING) Yes, you could say it’s
‘Alien’, alien to us, but to Upsiders
it’s junk ... a load of rusty scrap
iron (BANGING THE SHIP AGAIN) in fact
it's an old warship.
The camera pans up and over the ship. We the ship’s
superstructure, Bridge and guns. A faded name can be seen
‘HMAS BRISBANE’. Lug wanders off still muttering.
BUG
(AGITATED) War!? I told you it’s an
invasion!
BOG
Oh do shut up! Don’t be such a
crunkle.
They are all interrupted by a eerie noise from above like
an old haunted house door creaking. Bug and Bog dive for
cover behind Huggle. Oblivious Grandpa Lug continues his
inspection of the wall muttering as he walks.
LUG
In fact it's an Adams Class Guided
Missile Destroyer - Launched May 5th
1966 at the Defoe shipyards Bay City
Michigan USA - Displacement 3,370 tons
- length 133.19 metres - top speed 35
knots and ... it’s been scuttled.
High above a huge hatch slowly opens and with an enormous
bang folds back against the ship’s side.
BUG
A space scuttle! You see. I told you!
Now we’re all going to be ‘Alienated’.
A hose pipe snakes down from the hatch.
BUG (CONT'D)
(HORRIFIED) They’re going to suck our
brains out!
BOG
At least you’ll be OK.
A sound is coming from the end of the pipe.
3.
DUG
Step back ... I’ll check this out.
HUGGLE
Be careful!
Dug carefully picks up the hose pipe. He inspects it and
then puts his ear to the end. He listens for a moment then
hands the pipe to Huggle.
DUG
It’s for you.
Huggle is of course amazed, she gingerly puts her ear to
the pipe and listens. An angry look spreads over her face.
HUGGLE
You get down here right now!
CUT - INT. WARSHIP - HATCH AREA:
Zug is speaking into the other end of the pipe.
ZUG
But sis, Rocky says we can have an
apartment in here.
An indistinct voice crackles in the pipe.
Rocky steps out of the shadows and grins. He snatches the
pipe from Zug.
ROCKY
Yeah, come on up Babe, and I’ll show
you my penthouse.
He grimaces and pulls the pipe away from his ear as a
tirade of crackles comes from the pipe. He hands the pipe
to Zug.
ROCKY (CONT'D)
I think she wants to speak to you.
CUT - GROUND LEVEL - GREY WALL:
HUGGLE
(SHOUTING) If you think you will ever
get me in there you’ve got another
think coming!
Everyone is astounded at Huggle’s bravado.
BOG
(TO BUG) Now that’s how you should
behave - be strong. Just look them in
the eye and say ...
HUGGLE
(STILL SHOUTING INTO THE PIPE) and
Don’t call me ‘Babe’!
4.
Bog & Bug look at each other, Dug looks at them, they look
at him, Dug looks at Huggle, he shrugs. Huggle notices.
HUGGLE (CONT'D)
What!?
She hands Dug the pipe. It’s Zug’s voice at he end of the
pipe.
ZUG
I didn’t call you ‘Babe’.
