Since seminal work by Geim and Novoselov in 2004, graphene (a molecular sheet of graphite) has attracted a lot of attention from scientific community. In fact, graphene (GR) has been proven to be a truly unique material and the record holder for a number of physical parameters: elastic modulus, surface area, thermal conductivity4, carriers’ mobility5. Naturally such exceptional properties generated many speculations and excitement on areas of possible practical applications for GR: composite materials, transparent conductive films, sensors and electronics to name a few. In particular, introduction of GR (possessing unprecedented 130 GPa ultimate strength and 1 TPa Young’s modulus) into polymer matrices has already created a new class of polymer nanocomposites with unique properties. Currently, the most promising methods for high volume production of GR for the nanocomposites are based on reduction of graphene oxide (GO). It is necessary to point that, in spite of the structural defects, the elastic modulus of (the intermediate product) GO is still extremely high at 0.25 TPa (2-4 orders of magnitude higher than the modulus for conventional commercial polymers).
