Thick vapors mingle over a bubbling cauldron. A woman’s trembling hand stretches over scattered spices and herbs, reaching for a tiny, plastic vial. She struggles briefly with the seal until it pops off and shoots across the room. A stream of hushed words escape her lips while she adds three drops into the king-sized pot. The swirling liquid instantly explodes with raging smoke and flames.
Cece jumps back, guarding her eyes. After a moment, she rubs them then pats down loose strands of red hair poking through her high bun. Sweat drips from her forehead past her brows and trickles into her eyes, forcing her to blink. The earthy fragrance of cloves fuses with the air, alerting the other guardians.
Alice races into the room with Bridgette close behind. Bridgette’s hands waft wildly through the fumes obscuring her vision as her eyes tear.
“Cece, don’t!” shrieks Alice.
“You’re not talking me out of it this time,” Cece replies.
“Please, I’m begging you.”
“There are no alternatives. Why can’t you see that?”
