Anglais > Français : Two excerpts from a novel, 10000 words
THEME:
My novel Mauresque is set in Morocco in the 1970s. Jeremy Ashland, a young teacher is determined to be accepted as an enlightened foreigner at a time when its people, traditionally obsessed by memories of their own once Fortunate Empire, are emerging from the trauma of colonialism. As invaders, settlers or orientalists, foreigners had for generations made Morocco their plaything; underlying Jeremy’s adventures and the story of his forbidden love for a Moroccan girl is the tension between such interlopers and Moroccans themselves, whose conflicting championship of their country’s nationhood he becomes tragically embroiled in.
LENGTH:
I should like two excerpts from the novel to be translated, total around 10,000 words
No special urgency
Exemple du texte :
A carpet emporium by day, at night the roof of the once-grand house near Bou Inania Medersa became a restaurant. The candle-lit, split-level layout, partitioned with moucharaby screens, enabled them to choose an inconspicuous table away from the other diners. The gauche voices of British tourists made Jeremy feel uncomfortable, when Leila must be considering a future among such people.
The sleeves of her ribbed pullover ended well short of her wrists, accentuating her slender hands. There was no menu, but their hitherto overlooked appetites responded to the waiter’s description of chorba soup and briouats. When the chicken with olives was placed between them, Jeremy followed Leila’s lead, ignoring the unmatched cutlery and using his fingers and the plentiful bread.
‘Well?’ he eventually asked.
Leila ducked her head before raising it to gaze at him.
‘Do you like dressing up?’ She plunged on enthusiastically: ‘I hope you do. There’s everything we need at the house. But I’d better start at the beginning.
‘You remember I spent my earliest years there, until my parents left for Burgundy. After Independence, we began a new life in Casablanca, so all my infant memories crystallize here. My brother and I used to play hide-and-seek through the interconnecting rooms, around the alcoves in our pavilion, and in the garden; my favourite hiding-places were the old wardrobes, among the carefully preserved finery of past generations. My brother would find me easily, because I couldn’t resist dressing up. Once extravagantly attired in caftans, I would squat cross-legged with the women while they gossiped, begging Fatima to decorate my hands with harqus painting.’
‘That painstaking, criss-cross pattern? I thought it was a tattoo.’
‘It’s not permanent. Fatima used her own mixture of charcoal and oil. Another treat was sitting with my grandfather and listening to his tales of the Sale rovers, Bou Hamra’s revolt, the fate of the Jamaï brothers, whose palace was confiscated and became the hotel, and the splendours of the Saadians.’
Leila laid her hand on Jeremy’s. ‘Besides the wardrobes, there was an antique chest whose contents I was forbidden to touch: the gorgeous wedding apparel worn by generations of El Junnary brides. Wrapped in tissue paper and locked away from the light, those robes and their accoutrements became a source of fantasy and longing for the day they would be mine.’
Leila was trying to make herself heard above a cabaret that had started up. The Moroccan entertainers had inveigled the tourists into a mockery of a traditional dance, waggling their hips while still holding their cigarettes.
‘Unless I marry some puppet of my father’s, my lifelong dream will not be realized, and I shall never wear the magnificent, formal costume of a Fassi bride. So tomorrow, Jeremy, I’d like us to dress up and conduct our own wedding ceremony.’
